24 Feb Monferace: (re)discovering the Grignolino that we like
In times of increasingly social wine with likes, let’s start with a dry incipit: we really like Grignolino di Monferace. We can say it without mincing words, cleaned of well-polished and dusty tannins, after having tasted and re-tasted these Grignolinos in a Monferace marathon that took place on Wednesday 7 April. Twelve samples of Monferace, like apostles in a sort of wine evangelization to convert an audience made up of some experts in the sector’s journalism on the path of Grignolino in digital and real life, debunking some beliefs. And in fact it is a Grignolino that you don’t expect, that comes from afar.
Grignolino Monferace Liedholm 2018
In 1973, Baron Nils Liedholm purchased the Villa Boemia estate in Cuccaro Monferrato in the province of Alessandria on the hills of Monferrato with Barbera and Grignolino vineyards. Wine production began in 1977 only for family use, currently the company owns about 12 hectares of vineyards and the total production is about 80/90,000 bottles per year. Since July 2015 the property has passed to Società Agricola Monte Ferrato Srl belonging to an Industrial Group that is a world leader in its market segment. The 2018 sample is a surprise, it almost resembles a Vermouth, zero residual sugar but disguised by a great sweetness that comes from a particular soil and long macerations. It will be bottled soon, to follow with interest and taste again.
